This week, the Crypto is Easy newsletter turns 5 years old! I launched it right before the COVID crash in 2020. For proof, you can see the first issue from March 9, 2020.

Did you know that Stripe de-platformed me for allegedly laundering money when I started?

In 2019, I started writing on Medium and Quora to help beginners get started with crypto investing. I used this opportunity to force myself to dive deeper into the crypto/web3 projects that were overlooked by crypto influencers.

After a while, I realized that people tended to ask me the same questions over and over. So, I thought to myself…

Why not create a newsletter to answer them? A place for me to share my ideas, perspectives, and knowledge. 

Crypto is confusing, complicated, and hard to navigate, but if I could cut through the day-to-day hype, FUD, and vagaries of the market, maybe this newsletter could turn a complex industry into a digestible one. 

And so, Crypto is Easy was born.

I started with 18 free subscribers.

As a “thank you,” I gave away $5 in Bitcoin to those who bought a paid subscription.

Stripe did not like the idea as much as my readers! They tried to deplatform me a few months after I started. Here’s their original email:

They gave me 5 days to find another provider. How nice, right? 😂 

This was a misunderstanding but back in those days, Stripe was the only payment platform that worked with Substack, my newsletter platform at the time. I was pretty much screwed. I had to do something or my business would fail! 

The response I got through emails was limited, so I headed to Twitter:

Thanks to his response, we figured everything out. Crypto is Easy was allowed to operate. Since those first 18 readers, the newsletter’s grown to 25,000 subscribers.
